Carbon Offsetting

Carbon offsetting is an internationally recognised method of removing carbon from the atmosphere.

As concern grows for the amount of carbon being released into our atmosphere, it is our responsibility as individuals, households, businesses, investors etc to ensure we are combatting this issue. If not, we are on our way to further catastrophic disaster to our ecosystem.

In simple terms, offsetting refers to the reduction of carbon in the atmosphere generated by an activity that either prevents the release of, reduces, or removes GHG (greenhouse gases) emissions.

There are a great deal of projects around the world that generate carbon offsets from activities. These activities can include renewable energy and reforestation.

In the UK's path to Net zero strategy, there is new investment plans, one of which is:

'an extra £500 million towards innovation projects to develop the green technologies of the future, bringing the total funding for net zero research and innovation to at least £1.5 billion. This will support the most pioneering ideas and technologies to decarbonise our homes, industries, land and power'.

This strategy will effectively push and inspire more people to innovate and invest in new strategies that will offset emissions with the goal inevitably to ensure we stay below 1.5 degrees.

What can you do?

Here are some simple tips that can help you reduce your carbon footprint:

  • Switch to renewables
  • Use less water
  • Change your diet-meat and diary products require a lot of land, water and energy
  • Use alternative methods of transportation-cycle
  • Eliminate single-use plastics
