The United Nations has formed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The 17 sustainable development goals represent an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership.

The fashion Industry covers many of those 17 goals.

SDG 1: No Poverty

Workers are compelled to work extremely long hours in order to support themselves and their families. Employment conditions are rife, with temporary contracts, agency work and sub-contracting the norm. This reflects back to the Rana Plaza disaster when workers were left with minimal pay and forced labour. This SDG goal is put in place to ensure there is no poverty, full stop.

SDG 5: Gender Equity

The vast majority of workers in the fashion industry are made up of women.

Women are desirable in the garment industry because employers take advantage of cultural stereotypes – to which women are often obliged to adhere – that portrays women as passive and flexible.

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption And Production

The fashion system is still very much a linear approach however, this SDG focuses on ensuring there is a circular model, slowing down production rates and educating people on responsible consumption.
